Where should we link in the post?
You can link to your pages anywhere in the content. But it is always recommended to link in the top fold. In the sense link in the first paragraph of your content. Google crawls your post from top to bottom and indexes first instance of the links. So links in introductory paragraphs pass more search juice than links in the bottom or conclusion part.
Nofollow or Dofollow links?
Nofollow link tells search engines not to follow the link and don’t pass the rank. Dofollow link tells follow the link and pass the rank as well.
The above image says when Google spider reaches page A it sees links to pages B and E. If the links are dofollow links it will index B and E pages also. Many bloggers think dofollow internal links are treated as spam. But Matt Cutts said it doesn’t matter whether internal links nofollow or dofollow. But obviously passing link juice to your internal pages is an added advantage. So it is recommended to use dofollow internal links.
In WordPress if you select a link to open in the same window by default it is dofollow link. What if you want open in new window? Using follow nofollow control plugin set default setting to all your external links on your posts to dofollow or nofollow. You can exclude some domains you want. How many internal links?
According to Nick Bilton report top 98 websites have 369 links on an average on their homepage. According to Google single page can have 100 links. Google won’t consider that as spam provided you should not link to spam pages. If you are a blogger it is recommended to link 5 internal pages in a typical 500 words post. Because too many links may irritate the visitor. Bloggers always link to your own pages to open in the same window. The sad part is as we keep on posting we forget linking to older posts. At Tech Knol we use seo smart links to link to old content. This plugin can automatically link keywords and phrases in your posts and comments with corresponding posts, pages, categories and tags on your blog. Configure the plugin settings as in below images.
